Garrett Phelan is known as an artist who uses site-specific wall drawings and radio broadcasts to explore the processes through which values and ideas enter society. Less well known is the fact that Phelan is an avid bird-watcher. His touchingly rendered images of "Goodbirds" nestled in, caressed by, and protected by human hands belies the fact that this work harbors a complex, thought-provoking and powerful meaning. Phelan examines our contradictory relationship to nature; our romantic love of nature in opposition with our carelessness towards it. This series of artworks embodies the beauty of the natural world and reminds us that we must care for it.
