Blackbook — October 1, 2006

When you emerge from 12 hours of intensive neurosurgery, the last thing you want taxing your occipital lobe are a barrage of paint-by-number still lifes. Enter RxArt, a not-for-profit organization that brings original art by the likes of Ryan McGinness and Julie Mehretu to hospital corridors, morgue waiting rooms, and pediatric centers. RxArt commissioned assume vivid astro focus (at right) to brighten a wing at the NYU Child Study Center. Their next venture, set to drop in November, is Between the Lines: A Coloring Book of Drawings by Contemporary Artists, which will be distributed to children in hospitals free of charge. The book continues the philosophy of creative distraction with the help of Rita Ackermann, Jeremy Black, Ann Craven, and Gary Hume. In a few years’ time, when some six-year-old with no tonsils asks to draw in his Barney book, he’ll mean Matthew Barney.
