RxArt is thrilled to be working with Rashid Johnson on a new project for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Johnson’s new blue and white “Seascape” imagery will crown the two main treatment rooms of the hospital’s Gastroenterology department, where over 18,000 patients are cared for annually. Instead of focusing on the stark white walls and intense lights, patients will be able to feel transported by Johnson’s calming imagery. Additionally, Johnson’s kaleidoscopic “Escape” imagery (see gallery image) will be installed in two mother and family waiting rooms and a serenity lounge that serve approximately 4,500 expectant and new mothers each year. “I like the fact that my artwork is alive,” says Johnson. “I’ve always felt that my work was meant to be given away.”
Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is among the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2021-2022 Best Children’s Hospitals survey. Stanford Children’s Health is the largest health care network in the Bay Area that’s exclusively dedicated to pediatric and obstetric care. The hospital network provides care in more than 150 medical specialties, many of which are part of their centers of emphasis including brain & behavior, cancer, heart, orthopedics, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant.
RxART produces every project at no cost to the hospital and provides each commissioned artist with an honorarium. RxART is deeply grateful to Hauser & Wirth for their generous lead support of this project and to Cynthia Zabel, Gould Art Advisory, and David Kordansky Gallery.
