RxArt is proud to commission William Wegman for our first project in Michigan at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Wegman’s installation will bring 22 joyful photographs of his Weimaraner dogs to the corridors and waiting room of Hurley’s Pediatric Trauma Center and Burn Unit. This vital department serves over 1,500 individuals – infants to adults – annually, providing full spectrum care from injury to recovery. The Burn Unit is one of the most stressful areas in the hospital for patients and their families. Hospital leadership says that upon showing renderings for Wegman’s installation to a patient’s family, they were instantly uplifted and encouraged by the positive distraction the works will bring to the unit.
Wegman’s vibrant compositions are imbued with humor, narrative, and reference to art history and popular culture, bringing smiles to the faces of all ages. As part of our arts education initiative, he will create an activity related to the project. Over 11,000 children are cared for annually at Hurley Children’s Hospital and their community Clinic. The hospital is a recognized leader in clinical care and maintains affiliations with Michigan State University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Michigan-Flint, Children’s Hospital of Michigan-Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System.
