Anne Buckwalter
Anne Buckwalter

Anne Buckwalter (b. 1987, Lancaster, PA), is an artist exploring female identity and the coexistence of contradictory elements. Inspired by the folk art traditions of her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, her work arranges disparate objects in mysterious rooms and ambiguous spaces. By imagining obscure narratives that embrace paradoxes, her paintings delve into questions about the female body, intimacy, and gender roles. You can see how she translated her style into a coloring book page in Between the Lines: An RxART Coloring Book by Contemporary Artists – Volume 9

Buckwalter received her BFA from Tyler School of Art, and her MFA from Maine College of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include a dual venue presentation at Rebecca Camacho and Friends Indeed Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Rachel Uffner Gallery, NY; and Pentimenti Gallery, PA. Recent group exhibitions include ICA at MECA, Portland, ME; Alexander Berggruen, New York, NY; Nicola Vassell Gallery, New York, NY; Monya Rowe Gallery, NY; Andrea Festa Fine Art, Rome, Italy; and Office Baroque, Brussels, Belgium. Buckwalter received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2021 and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant in 2016. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation; Mass MoCA; the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity; Hewnoaks Artist Colony; Galveston Artist Residency; and the Vermont Studio Center. Her work is in the collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Aishti Foundation, Lebanon; Art Museum of West Virginia; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; and Zuzeum, Latvia.
