Jammie Holmes

Jammie Holmes (b. 1984, Thibodaux, LA) is a self-taught painter who focuses on depicting the realities of Black life in the Deep South. Holmes’ work showcases figures tied to their environment, often representing his home-state of Louisiana as something beyond the myth of Southern charm and hospitality, but where poverty and racism are a structural constant. However, Holmes also tries to capture a sense of communal joy by focusing on scenes of Black celebration and tradition.

Recent solo exhibitions of Holmes’ work have been held at Library Street Collective, Detroit, MI (2021 and 2020); Dallas Contemporary, TX (2020), among others. Holmes lives and works in Dallas, TX. Holmes’ work is featured in Between the Lines: An RxART Coloring Book by Contemporary Artists – Volume 8. Click here to download and color his spread.
